General-Major of the General Staff N.N. Artamonov (1872–1937): A Biography in Light of New Sources

Abstract

The publication is a historical and biographical study of the HIM Nicholas General staff academy graduate, general–major N.N. Artamonov (1872–1937) who served in the Russian Imperial army, the White army, the Red Army and remained in Soviet Russia. The study draws primarily on unpublished materials from 1920s-1930s stored in the Russian State Military Archive, Historical Archive of the Omsk Region, and archive of the Federal Security Service of Russia Directorate for the Omsk region. Of greatest information potential are personal provenance documents (autobiographies and questionnaires of N.N. Artamonov), documents from special register on former White officers and investigatory records of Soviet state security agencies. The identified sources allow an in-depth reconstruction of N.N. Artamonov’s biography. The publication is aimed at a large audience of scholars in Russian military history, Soviet society, and repressive policies of the Soviet state, and also practicing genealogists.
