History of everyday life of World War I: methodology and sources

Annotation

The aim of the research is analysis sources of the history of World War I for the formation the concept of studying military everyday life. The author reproduces the main stages of the development of research methodology in the short form, gives a comparative description of the definitions of the term “everyday life” in modern science. O.A. Sukhova concludes that the interest of modern researchers to study specific aspects of everyday life changing. Many authors note the need for more analysis of social interactions. According to the opinion of the author, the specific of the history of everyday life in the era of World War I is the reconstruction of the dichotomy between Stability – Extreme, and features of the transformation behavior (the adaptation, the transition from the familiar life-world in the extreme). The array of documents submitted by the regional archives collections of the country can reveal the diversity of social ties in the history of everyday life of this period. Among the sources: clerical documentation of local government and self-government: offices of governors, city councils, zemstvo, and provincial presences for Land and Urban Affairs, district and provincial police and gendarmerie. The author describes features of documentary filling of archival holdings military era. O.A. Sukhova notes kind of sources of origin of mass (for example, petitions to the governor, different kinds of treatment in the power, materials of covert monitoring of mass moods, personal documents, detained by the military censorship), that enables extensive use method of content analysis. During the analysis the author concludes that the incorporation in the usual everyday reality of extreme practices, interactions, relationships, and the actors will play an essential feature of the organization of social space in the era of World War I. The sequence of deconstruction elements of everyday life will depend on the time of the outbreak and escalation of large and small intension of the living space.
