Establishment of the Civil Ranks System in Russia, Preparation of the Table of Ranks by Peter the Great
Abstract
The article considers establishment of the system of civil ranks in Russia in the early 18th century drawing on decrees of Peter the Great that provided the basis for the Table of Ranks. The author offers a brief analysis of existing tables of civil ranks in Denmark, England, Sweden and Prussia, studies personal input of senior officials and Peter I himself in the introduction of the Table of Ranks. The survey has shown that the issue of establishment of the civil ranks system has never been a subject of comprehensive study in the Russian historical science. Establishment of the civil ranks system was studied to various extents by a number of researchers in a general context of state development and disclosed in a number of articles and publications. Analysis of publications on the subject shows that most of them are descriptive and do not reach the level of profound scientific and theoretical study. In some publications the subject of civil ranks is touched upon in passing in connection to some heraldic or phaleristics issues. Thus, analysis of the scholarship allows conclude that until now the subject issue has never been a subject of close scholarly attention, which has prompted the author to study the issue. As Russia returns to its cultural traditions, including those concerning the Army as an institute, the scholarly and practical significance of the article subject matter is evident. It is sure to arouse some interest within the military education system. The author makes authoritative use of the sources, the Complete Collection of Laws of the Russian in particular.
