About the first satirical Samara weekly “Gorchishnik”

Annotation

The article focuses on the history of the first Samara satirical weekly publication “Gorchishnik” (1906). There have been published 4 issues of the magazine that described social and political events in humorous poems, satires, caricatures. The weekly publication set the development vector for the following regional satirical periodical publications. Having analysed the documents, the authors have concluded that though the idea to create “Gorchishnik” has come to its publisher N.A.Samoilov during the period of active firght of state authorities with revolutionary spirit in the society, the first publication was challenging because of subjective reasons. According to the facts, the vice-governor postponed issuing the license to publish the magazine not because of political reservations but due to the bureaucracy. The official was concerned to take the decision about the publication with the name that was equal to the street ruffians’ nickname that was spread in Samara in the end of 19th – beginning of 20th century. On the basis of archival documents, the authors have reconstructed the circumstances of starting and closing the magazine, and analysed invective function of its title. Having analysed the biography of the magazine founder N.A.Samoilov, the authors have found one onomastic detail that characterize the newspapers published in Samara in 1900s. That time a significant contribution in the development of local journalism was made by two people with the same name and surname. The publisher of the first satirical periodical publication, nobleman N.A.Samoilov and his namesake, writer, journalist of Samarskaya gazeta, bourgeois N.N.Samoilov were mixed sometimes even by contemporaries though they did not have anything in common. During a long time pre-revolutionary satirical publication did not relate to the interests of scientific research. However, due to the work of renowned ethnographer of Samara region G.M.Shereshevski, it became possible to understand an important role of “Gorchishnik” in the history of local press. For the first time, Shershevski’s contribution to the learning of local periodical publications is being analysed in this article.
