Annotation

This paper provides an overview of the documents stored at the Central State Archive of the Moscow region containing information on the history of the First World War. The author analyzes the composition of documentary complexes and, having undertaken critical examination of some of them, makes an assessment of information resources and heuristic potential of the identified documents. Much attention is focused on researching the data on the state of field hygiene and organization of medical practice during the World War I. The author closely examines the fond of the Moscow provincial committee of the all-Russian zemsky board for relief aid to sick and wounded soldiers comprising of documents of 1914-1920. The article offers a comprehensive assessment of the materials in the fonds of personal provenance of doctors and orderly men of the World War I. The study uncovered some interesting data on participation of medical doctors from the Moscow region in the Balkan campaign on the eve of the World War I. A diary of Ivan Antonovich Arjamov was discovered. The author, a fifth-year student of the faculty of medicine of the Moscow University, was mobilized in December 1914 as warrant medical officer and spent the following two years in the Balkans. He kept his diary faithfully and later, in 1951, based his memoirs on it, a study in doctors’ attitude towards the war, a description of the days of war, of the amenities and the condition of medical service on the front. Of certain scientific interest is also the album of M.A. Nevjadomskij, a sanitary doctor on the South-Western front. Some of the photos feature S.S. Brjuhonenko, later a renowned physiologist, MD, inventor of the heart-lung machine and the ‘iron lung’. Little is known about his sojourn on the front of the World War I. These photos can fill in some of the gaps in his biography. Altogether, the reseach indicates that documents of the Central State Archive of the Moscow region offer ample information resources for studying the history of the World War I.
